Most Popular Questions
Silk Matte is one of our most popular and premium coatings that offers a suede-like and almost rubbery texture. It is applied as a film and provides rigidity and durability. This coating is completely flat in that it does not reflect any shine, making colours appear slightly darker or muted. Silk Matte can be easily written on with a standard ball point pen or permanent marker (gel or inky pens will smudge).
Silk Matte is available on the following stocks:
- 10pt
- 12pt Uncoated
- 16pt
- 16pt Vibrant Gray
- 20pt
- 24pt stocks stock

What is the difference between Silk Matte and Silk Matte Plus?
Silk Matte Plus is much softer and smoother to the touch compared to Silk Matte. As this coating offers a higher level of opacity, it will not alter colors much like Silk Matte does. Designs with deep and saturated colors will have a better color output with Silk Matte Plus and foil details are much better, offering a more premium product.

What are the differences between your matte coatings?
We offer 5 types of matte coatings: Matte, Smooth Matte Laminate, Silk Matte, Silk Matte Plus, and Textured Matte.
Matte
Of all our matte coatings, Matte offers a slight sheen when held against light because the coating is in liquid form (like a varnish). It is smooth to the touch and can be written on with a regular ball point pen; however, as it is a coated stock, we suggest to give it a little time to dry before touching the ink so it does not smudge.
Smooth Matte Laminate
Smooth Matte Laminate (along with Silk Matte and Textured Matte) are all laminate coatings. A thin layer of film is applied to the card, adding extra durability and strength, and also making it feel thicker. Smooth Matte Laminate has a smoother and less rubbery texture than that of Silk Matte. It is also available with or without Spot UV.
Silk Matte
Our most popular matte coating is Silk Matte because of its "soft touch" and distinguishable texture. It is versatile as it is available with our digital and offset print process.
It is important to note that Silk Matte can make colors appear dull. If you prefer to have vivid colors, we suggest choosing Matte coating or a coating that will enhance colors like Semi Gloss or Matte. Additionally, when dark colors are used (like black), finger prints may be more visible with Smooth Matte Laminate, Silk Matte and Silk Matte Plus. If this will be a concern, we suggest choosing an uncoated stock. All three coatings can be written on with a regular pen with little to no smudging.
Silk Matte Plus
Silk Matte Plus is similar to Silk Matte, but is much softer and smoother to the touch. Another advantage is that it offers higher clarity so it will not alter colors as much compared to Silk Matte. Silk Matte Plus also takes foil details better.
Textured Matte
Textured Matte has an incredible, sandy-like texture that doesn't compromise the quality of print (solid colors and large ink coverage will print well and not look blotchy). This coating is durable and acts like a protective layer against scuffing.

What is the difference between Offset Silk Matte cards and Digital Silk Matte cards?
The key difference between these two options is the print process, which affects the cost and the turnaround time.
Digital is a better choice if you require a small quantity (500 or less) and a quick turnaround time. It is available with a Same Day service and on the following stocks:
- 10pt
- 12pt Uncoated
- 16pt
- 16pt Vibrant Gray
- 20pt
- 24pt stocks stock
Offset is more economical for larger quantity orders with no critical deadline. Offset produces higher quality of printing than Digital and will have better print results for designs with gradients, large areas of grey color or high resolution photographic images. It is available on 16pt stock only.

- Bleed Area

Bleed Area refers to images that extend to the very edges of a design. To prevent an unwanted white border from showing at the edge of your design, or for the design to appear slightly off-center, be sure to extend any background colors or design elements all the way to the edge of bleed (.125” past the trim on all four sides).
Trim Area refers to the amount of the image that will appear on your finished product. These areas will also be marked with ‘cut lines’ on your proof and are where we aim to cut your card.
Safety Area in most cases refers to 1/8 of an inch inside of the Trim Area. For thicker papers 20pt and up or wooden papers the Safety Area increases ¼ of an inch inside the Trim Area. we strongly recommend you keep important aspects of your design such as text and logos well inside of the Safety Area, otherwise, they may be cut off.
