What is the different between Cotton and Bamboo Stocks?
Both Cotton and Bamboo stocks are uncoated, speck-free, and richly textured. They are perfect for letterpress because, while soft to the touch, their complex structure and strength is ideal for withstanding the intense pressure of letterpress operation and still rendering sharp and clean impressions with lots of detail.
There is a crispness and familiarity to Cotton. It is the most common of the tree-free fibers and has always been recognized for its soft and lavish feel, becoming the gold standard of paper. And because Cotton is stronger than wood pulp–based papers, it is favoured for its durability.
Bamboo stock embodies all of Cotton’s coveted qualities – texture, durability, and luxury – plus one more: sustainability. Bamboo stock has recently gained popularity thanks to its environmental properties, becoming the ultimate alternative fiber for paper-making. As you probably know, Bamboo is one of the most renewable resources available and the fastest-growing plant on earth; some species grow up to 90 centimeters a day without the need for pesticides or much water. Bamboo fibers are also stronger than wood and therefore business cards made with this unique material are more durable than wood, but that doesn’t translate into stiffness. Bamboo cards render a sophisticated tactile experience, crucial for a memorable first impression.
Looking closely, Bamboo’s beautiful woven surface features a slightly larger pattern and more texture than Cotton, and its off-white hue gives it a unique warm and earthy feeling, ideal for business cards that are meant to be held and kept.
Bamboo stock is the ultimate backdrop for letterpress, embossing, and foiling, whether you choose 16pt or a thicker 36pt. Request your sample pack today and compare for yourself these two exceptional printing materials that will make your business cards stand out.
What finishes are available on the Cotton cards?
The Cotton stock is suitable for:
- CMYK printing
- Custom Shapes (die-cutting)
- Foiling (Gold, Silver and any other colour)
- Embossing and debossing
- Painted or foiled edges
- Letterpress
Cotton stock is soft and uncoated, making it a great choice for specialty add-ons like letterpress, embossing or debossing. Please note that ultra thick 40pt Cotton is not available with standard CMYK print, as it is too thick to run through a printer. We recommend letterpress for designs on 40pt Cotton. All add-ons listed above can be added to the thinner 20pt Cotton options. If you have questions or concerns about this stock being suitable for your intended uses, please call our Customer Service Line for advice.
Please keep in mind, the Cotton stock is a refined softer stock, it is not as rigid as other stocks (such as the 18pt Brown Kraft stock).
How does the Cotton stock compare to other stocks?
Cotton paper has a soft textured feel. It is lighter in feeling than other cards of similar weight – and due to its flexibility, may actually feel thinner.
Cotton stock with offset inks
We offer Letterpress output using high-grade offset inks. This output and ink provides a much more solid colour coverage on the Cotton stock.
We can accept one-colour and two-colour print jobs for this process. The lighter impression used by the Letterpress output gives an offset-like finish at top quality.
The following example shows a comparison on the Cotton stock between the two.

- Bleed Area

- Safe Area
Bleed Area refers to images that extend to the very edges of a design. To prevent an unwanted white border from showing at the edge of your design, or for the design to appear slightly off-center, be sure to extend any background colors or design elements all the way to the edge of bleed (.125” past the trim on all four sides).
Trim Area refers to the amount of the image that will appear on your finished product. These areas will also be marked with ‘cut lines’ on your proof and are where we aim to cut your card.
Safety Area in most cases refers to 1/8 of an inch inside of the Trim Area. For thicker papers 20pt and up or wooden papers the Safety Area increases ¼ of an inch inside the Trim Area. we strongly recommend you keep important aspects of your design such as text and logos well inside of the Safety Area, otherwise, they may be cut off.
