We offer 3 types of Brown Kraft stocks, all of which are 100% recycled:
Brown Kraft Natural, the original of our Kraft Collection, offers the most range of thicknesses: 15pt, 18pt, 22pt, 32pt and 45pt. Choose Brown Kraft Natural if you want a brown coloured stock that isn't too light, nor too dark. Throughout the stock are random flecks from the recycled content, giving products an added touch of character. This stock is uncoated, and has a smooth yet slightly textured feel.
Dark Brown Kraft is the darkest of the Brown Kraft collection and is available in 18pt thickness. It's deep colour andh ligt coloured visible fibers lend a nice vintage sensation to any product, making it the ideal choice for old style prints. Like the rest of our Brown Kraft collection, Dark Brown Kraft is uncoated with an organic feel.
- Light Brown Kraft is the most recent addition to our Brown Kraft collection. Available in 14pt thickness, this stock is uncoated, very smooth and feels heavier than an average 14pt stock due to its rigidity. Of the entire Brown Kraft collection, Light Brown Kraft provides the most design flexibility - colours print the most vibrant on this stock and is the best for designs with fine line weights. Our Light Brown Kraft also has very fine but noticeable hairlines in black, blue and red.
What is the finest detail you recommend on Kraft card?
We recommend fine detail to be over 2pt line thickness – of a solid dark colour.
See: Fine detail.
What colour are the Brown Kraft cards?
The following is a breakdown of the approximate colours of the stocks:
0, 26, 73, 44
CMYK: 0, 38, 67, 40
Based on the colour of the 18pt Kraft stock. Different types of Brown Kraft stock are different shades (for example the Brown Kraft Wrapping Paper).
Please note the colour of the stock can vary.
How will colour look on the Brown Kraft?
Colours will appear different to when printed on a white paper.
We do not print white ink as part of regular CMYK printing. Elements in your design that are white will be blank (hence show the brown paper). The paper stock will affect the way that colours appear due to the slightly translucent quality of the ink (you will see the brown paper through the ink, especially in lighter shades).
Colours in the orange, yellow, brown spectrum will tend to not be visible as the brown colour of the paper will not contrast enough with the ink. This occurs with light and pastel colours as well.
The values below are just a few sample CMYK combinations that work on Brown Kraft:
- Red (5-15, 90-100, 75-100, 0)
- Orange (0, 50, 100, 0)
- Blue (63-100, 0, 0-12, 0)
- Green (75, 5, 100, 0)
- Rich Black (60, 40, 40, 100)
We do not recommend colours in the following range:
- Yellow (0-20, 0-20, 100, 0-20)
- Light Blue (0-20, 0-10, 0-10, 0-10)
- Light Pink / Red (0-10, 0-20, 0-20, 0-10)
- Grey (0-10, 0-10, 0-10, 0-20)
While white and light ink colours cannot be achieved on Brown Kraft with standard CMYK printing, there are other speciality services that can. This includes screen printing and foil stamping, which you can request through our Print Quote form.
As the Brown Kraft is textured it does not hold fine detail.
White ink on Brown Kraft
White ink can be applied using screen printing (or sometimes a foiling process) for an additional cost. This service is not included as an option in most of our standard products.
Pricing and ordering is available via a Print Quote.

- Bleed Area

- Safe Area
Bleed Area refers to images that extend to the very edges of a design. To prevent an unwanted white border from showing at the edge of your design, or for the design to appear slightly off-center, be sure to extend any background colors or design elements all the way to the edge of bleed (.125” past the trim on all four sides).
Trim Area refers to the amount of the image that will appear on your finished product. These areas will also be marked with ‘cut lines’ on your proof and are where we aim to cut your card.
Safety Area in most cases refers to 1/8 of an inch inside of the Trim Area. For thicker papers 20pt and up or wooden papers the Safety Area increases ¼ of an inch inside the Trim Area. we strongly recommend you keep important aspects of your design such as text and logos well inside of the Safety Area, otherwise, they may be cut off.
Design Considerations for Brown Kraft
Kraft cards are an exciting product we are proud to offer – but there are some details that should be considered when designing for this product.
The paper stock will affect the way that colours appear, and some lighter colours may not be very visible when printed on the brown paper. Medium to heavy ink shades tend to appear darker when printed over the brown paper.
Please see our colour reference chart below comparing the same colour values printed on a Brown Kraft stock vs a white stock. Note: You can open the image in a new tab for a larger view.
*Image is for reference only - your final printed results may vary.
CMYK printing is made up of Cyan, Yellow, Magenta and Black - therefore there is no white ink possible through regular printing. When you view your proof, the white areas in the proof will be considered transparent, and will end up being the brown paper itself in the final product. Your design and proof are not colour accurate.
If white ink is important to your design, this is available via Screen Printing at an additional cost, and can be ordered through a Print Quote request. If you wish to add white ink to an order that is already placed, please call our Customer Service Line.

Texture & Fine Detail
Kraft paper is has a natural texture – it is an uncoated card stock. Due to the texture on this stock – it cannot hold fine detail as well as a coated stock.
The finest detail we recommend is 1pt line-weight.
Margin and Shifting
The recommend a safety margin away from the trim line for all products. The safety margin for Kraft depends on the thickness of the stock.
Due to the thickness of the 22pt stock it can shift significantly during printing and trimming processes. Shifts of 0.0625" to 0.125" can occur (which can cause your design appear off-centre). This is the reason we recommend a larger safety margin of 0.25 inches.
