How to print your calendar so it actually looks good.
You’ve put time, effort, and attention into creating a beautiful calendar to adorn your home. Printing it correctly isn’t just the cherry on top; it makes the whole calendar come to life. Here’s how to achieve a professional finish so that adding handwritten notes and turning over each page adds a little extra joy to your days and months.
Paper weight.
Paper choice, specifically weight, matters. Even when printing at home, the end product should feel like a real calendar, not a flimsy printout that isn’t sturdy enough to hang firmly on your wall. Consider a 59-80 lb heavyweight presentation paper. It’s thick enough to prevent ink bleeding when you’re marking those important dates like birthdays or seasonal events, but thin enough not to jam your home inkjet or laser printer.
Paper coating.
Paper coating impacts the look and feel of your calendar. Matte or smooth are both good choices for a calendar you’re planning to print at home. The choice ultimately depends on your individual preferences, home lighting, and the calendar design itself.
- Matte. A matte finish feels flat or velvety. It also absorbs light, which eliminates glare. If the lighting in your home is bright, a matte finish means that you can still read the text on your calendar without any distracting shine.
- Smooth. Glossy or semi-gloss photo paper is the most commonly used for at-home printing. If your calendar has a lot of family photos, glossy or semi-gloss photo paper will help to bring out their vibrancy. There is a slight downside, though: gloss paper shows fingerprints and makes it a little harder to handwrite your notes in the calendar squares.
Paper color.
Aside from paper weight and coating, the right paper color will either elevate or dampen the feel of your calendar. To keep it simple, consider bright white — it heightens contrast, making grid lines and text pop.

How do I print a calendar without the edges getting cut off?
There are a couple of things that you can do to stop your calendar edges from getting cut off when printing at home. First, when designing your calendar, set the side margins slightly wider, making sure they’re at least 0.5 inches. You can also keep important text away from the side margins so it stays clear of the paper edge when printing.
Before printing, make sure your paper size matches the calendar document's size (so an A4 design should be printed on A4 paper). You can also change your printer settings to "Fit to Page" or "Shrink to Fit," or set it at about 90% depending on your printer. For wider calendars, set the orientation to “Landscape.”
Mistakes people make when printing at home.
When you’re printing a calendar at home, mistakes are easy to make. Buying incorrect paper is a common one. By “incorrect,” we mean that it’s not compatible with your printer and that the paper size doesn’t match the calendar document’s size.
You can avoid this mistake by checking the paper specifications before you buy any. First, make sure the paper size matches the calendar document size. Then check for printer compatibility. The packaging should clearly state whether it is compatible with your home printer, so, for example, whether it’s suitable for inkjet or laser.
