Most Popular Questions
Foiling or Foil Stamping is a premium printing method that involves the creation of a custom metal die of your artwork. The die is then used to stamp the foil material onto the surface of your product. We offer many different colors and finishes of foil; ranging from Matte White, to metallic colors like Gold or Silver. The cost of Foil is calculated based on each color used on each side of your design.
You should not choose Foil if:
- You want the most economical option available
- You are printing a photographic image
- Your design includes gradients
You should choose Foil if:
- You have a vector design that you need printed in white and on a colored paper stock
- You want a true metallic color in your design
- You want a premium product
- You are able to set up the proper files for foil stamping
File Setup Example with CMYK Printing & Foil
File Setup for Foil
File setup for foil artwork can be a complex process and should be completed by an experienced designer. If you would like our Design Team to create your foil design, please request a Design Quote and we will provide you with the costs.
Some products are only available with foil, like our Premium Black business cards. Other stocks allow for ink printing as well as foil stamping. When combining the two processes, you will need to submit a separate file for the artwork to be produced in foil and the artwork that is to be printed. It’s also important to note that printed artwork can only be registered to foil artwork with offset output printing. If you are trying to align foil with other printed artwork, please keep in mind that shifting up to 1/16" will be expected.
Creating Your Foil Artwork as a Separations File
You will need to create a black and white file for the foil artwork (the black areas will indicate where you want the foil placed - white will show areas where you do not want the foil). This can be done in many ways in your design program – by setting up new layers, defining a new artboard (new page) or creating a separate file.
The areas for treatment (foil) will need to be defined in black ink, and the black colour used must be CMYK Black only – with no grey colours, or other inks.
The design must be created in vector-format (such as in Illustrator or InDesign).
CMYK: 0, 0, 0, 100
Export each separation as a press-ready PDF file. If you have multiple colours of foil in your order, you will need to create the artwork for each colour as a separate file.
Name your files according to the TYPE, COLOUR, SET and SIDE.
Example: One set of cards with gold foil on the front and silver foil on the back.
Names: "Foil_Gold_Set1_Front" and "Foil_Silver_Set1_Back"
What Foil colors are available?
We offer many different colors and finishes of foil; ranging from Matte White, to metallic colors like Gold or Silver. If you are looking for a color that is not listed on our site, we will do our best to fill your requirements - Please contact us by submitting a Print Quote request including details of your custom needs. Foil Type Options
We offer the following types of foil:
Metallic: This is the shiniest and most popular type of foil. It is most commonly used in Silver and Gold but is available in most other common colors by request.
Pigment: This is a more subtle foil and looks more similar to ink. Pigment foils are available in all popular colors with either a Gloss or Matte finish.
Pastel: Our pastel range consists of lighter-colored, uncoated foils. These provide the best results when used on uncoated card stocks. For pastel colors not available in foil, we can also achieve pastels using a Screen Print method instead.
Pearl: Pearl foils add a touch of sparkle and shine to a design, much like our Pearl Business Card range.
A special note about Pearl Foils:
Pearl Foils are shiny, slightly translucent and have a shimmery pearl effect when used on white paper stocks.
Pearl foils may still be used on colored stocks, but this is less recommended, as the shimmer effect will be dimmed and the color of the paper might be visible through the foil. This can produce undesired results on the final product.
Special Effect: This includes patterned, multi-colored, holographic and scratch-off foils. These are available through a Print Quote request only.
How can I see all the colors of foil that you offer?
Many of our specialty additions are not kept in stock until needed for an order. Please place a Print Quote request with the color(s) you are interested in for foiling, and we will do our best to fulfill your request.
Finest Detail for Foil Artwork
The finest detail recommended for foil stamping is 1pt line thickness. If you are using white foil, the minimum is 2pt.
Lines as thin as 0.5pt may be used in some cases; however, you will need to accept the risk of unwanted output. Fine details under 1pt may cause the edges of the foiled area to look jagged, or have small breaks.

Select File Format:
- Bleed Area
- Trim Area
- Safe Area
Bleed Area refers to images that extend to the very edges of a design. To prevent an unwanted white border from showing at the edge of your design, or for the design to appear slightly off-center, be sure to extend any background colors or design elements all the way to the edge of bleed (.125” past the trim on all four sides).
Trim Area refers to the amount of the image that will appear on your finished product. These areas will also be marked with ‘cut lines’ on your proof and are where we aim to cut your card.
Safety Area in most cases refers to 1/8 of an inch inside of the Trim Area. For thicker papers 20pt and up or wooden papers the Safety Area increases ¼ of an inch inside the Trim Area. we strongly recommend you keep important aspects of your design such as text and logos well inside of the Safety Area, otherwise, they may be cut off.
